Greetings folks! Here’s my first attempt of reviewing a game for my Game Design and Programming’s assignment (I wouldn’t do it otherwise *wink*).
P.S : prone to grammatical errors.
P.P.S : Hey, I’ve done my best! (or tried to).
Genre (s) : Adventure, Puzzle
Developer : 5th Cell
Publisher : Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Maxwell and Lily are back! After their eventful and fun adventure on Scribblenauts Unlimited, now they are trapped in DC Comics Universe. Maxwell now has to join forces with Batman, Superman and the rest of The Justice League to help all residents of DC Comics Universe. They will have to battle famous villains to figure out who’s behind all of things that are happening to DC Comics Universe.
Gameplay
Similar to other Scibblenauts series, players will be playing as Maxwell. Maxwell is a boy who has a magical notepad that can create or manifest any object or person or animal. This notepad can also add any adjective to all object/person/animal even on Maxwell himself.
Stuffs that are created from Maxwell’s notepad can also triggered certain reaction to nearby people like fear, joy, excitement, or will entice a fight for certain characters. For example, I created Cthulu with Maxwell’s notepad.
After the Cthulu manifested, my Green Lantern Corps sidekick immediately reacted by attacking it because he perceived Cthulu as a threat. Villain characters will also trigger this reaction to any hero characters.
Maxwell can interact directly to objects (e.g., to ride, activate/deactivate, attack). To attack, Maxwell can use gun, bazooka, laser sword, baton, armed vehicles, and fire-breathing ability or basically any weapon and ability you can think of. In this series Maxwell can also spawn any DC Comics’ costume and each costume will have several awesome attributes that will be added to Maxwell every time he wears it. For example, I use Blue Lanterns Corps costume a lot in this game because it will spawn a random member of Green Lantern Corps as a sidekick (I mean why not?).
My sidekick 😀
Details about my sidekick (Meet Rot Lop Fan). Note: Your sidekick will be chosen randomly.
Now that you have a glimpse of the basic, ‘what will we do with this knowledge’ you may ask? Since ‘puzzle’ is listed as one of the genre above, the gameplay without a doubt will be filled with riddle and puzzle given by objects or people across DC Comics Universe. Maxwell will have to spawn or do something to solve it.
Example:
“I travel in darkness. Put out that lamp post.” To solve this puzzle Maxwell can either put an adjective to the lamp post or simply turn it off.
When the puzzle solved you will get a Reputation Point.
Reputation Points
Reputations points are gives as a reward of solving puzzle. It can be reduced if you use the same word again in one stage. There are three types of reputation points: Gotham Reputation Points, Metropolis Reputation Points, and Justice League Reputation Points.
Reputation points can be used to unlock costumes, stages or places, and Origin Story (which will be explained later).
Costumes
You can access costumes with Batcomputer. There are a lot of iconic DC Comics Universe’s costumes ranging from heroes’ to villains’. Each costume will give Maxwell varied abilities or weapons. If you fancy Superman’s abilities such as flying, laser-vision and ice-breathing you can unlock one and wear it. Or if you prefer Flash’s speed ability then you can spawn Flash’s costume. Costumes can be unlocked with Reputation Points.
Stages and Places
In this version of series, there are twelve stages/places in total. Different places might give you different Reputation Points. Gotham Reputation Points are rewarded in Gotham City, Wayne Manor, Arkham Asylum, and Joker’s Funhouse. Metropolis Reputation Points are rewarded in Metropolis and Fortress of Solitude. Although Watchtower classified as part of Metro’s stages (since to unlock it you need Metropolis Reputation Points), Watchtower doesn’t have any side-puzzle like other places hence you can’t collect any Reputation Points from there. Justice League Reputation Points are rewarded in Oa, Central City, Atlantis, and Themyscira.
Each place has story quest known as stage. Stages are unlocked with Reputation Points.
Origin Story
In addition to main stages there are also six origin stories, quick puzzles that will reveal back stories of the main Justice Leaguers. As always to unlock it you will need bunch of Reputation Points.
- Batman Origin Story
- Wonder Woman Origin Story
- Superman Origin Story
- Aquaman Origin Story
- Green Lantern Origin Story
- The Flash Origin Story
Example: Superman Origin Story
DC Comics Characters
Scribblenauts Unmasked’s database is packed with over 2,000 DC Characters and iconic items. Imagine browsing through all of that! On that note, how awesome is that! You can spawn any version of Superman, Robin’s bike, Batmobile, entire crew of any version of Justice League, entire crew of Injustice League (again, why not?), entire corps of Green Lantern, Blue Lantern, Yellow Lantern, Red Lantern, Teen Titans, even Louis Lane.
Which Superman should I spawn?
Good Dark Side Superman
Good Dark Side Superman is having a fit with Evil Dark Side Superman
Overall
For me it’s really a fun game to play. The puzzles are not really that difficult to solve if you solve it with ordinary plain way that is. You really have to be creative on solving it in order to make it more interesting. Try to spawn more unusual objects and use weird adjectives and see things unfold. The graphic is more refined compared to Scribblenauts Unlimited. Sound effects and music are awesome since it’s very DC–ish. There is only one thing that doesn’t really sit well with me though. The storyline is too short for my liking; I guess I like Scribblenauts Unlimited better on that aspect. Other than that it’s great light adventure game and well-suited to be played with your friends or family. And thus hilarity ensues.
Howdy y’all, just me chillaxing on a flying couch with my deadly bowgun in Batcave. Robin, why so serious?
